Atlanta Stair Lift User Safety with Sterling–Handicare Lifts
Most stair lifts are purchased by senior citizens, or by family members of the senior who are seeking a safe mode of travel for a loved one as they go up and down the stairs. Straight and curved stair lifts by Sterling-Handicare offer optimal user safety. Safety
is a primary factor when purchasing a stair lift. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 15,000 deaths each year can be attributed to accidental falls.
Stair lift safety is critical for every member of the home in which a stair lift is installed. It is important to ensure that a stair lift has been approved by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). ASME has specific safety guidelines that ensure a stair lift’s efficiency and reliability as assistive technology equipment. Todays stair lifts are equipped with battery backup so that they can be used in the event of a power outage.

The HealthCraft SuperPole System Provides Stability for Atlanta Residents with Disabilities
The HealthCraft SuperPole System is exactly what you need to stabilize yourself as you get in and out of bed, or mobilize around your bedroom, bathroom or kitchen. Award winning Health Craft SuperPoles are easily mounted at the bedside, in the kitchen or anywhere an extra bit of support for balance is needed. The HealthCraft SuperPole System stabilizes Atlanta residents with disabilities.
The SuperPole System is used to assist with standing, transferring, or moving in bed. It is an award winning modular support system designed for those requiring assistance to get in and out of bed due to a disability, progressive illness, or an accident. It is made up of a stylish floor-to-ceiling grab bar, which can be installed in minutes between a floor and ceiling. It is very easy to install or relocate from room to room as needed.
Quoting the HealthCraft website, “The screw “expands” the pole to create enough tension between the floor and ceiling to hold the pole “rock solid” secure. Rubber pads on the ceiling plate and the floor plate hold pole secure and prevent marring of floor and ceiling, even stipple ceilings.”
Comfortable and attractive, the foam hand grip establishes a safe gripping surface, especially useful for people with limited hand strength. The clean and stylish design will fit in well in any home. The top end mechanism can be custom designed, and angled or sloping ceiling adaptors are available.
The SuperPole also serves as a mounting support for a complete range of optional pieces that can be supplemented to accommodate changing needs, including The SuperBar, SuperTrapeze, SuperTray and Safety Island.

Straight and Curved Stair Lifts
Straight and curved stair lifts are installed to provide residents with mobility from floor to floor within the home; or installed on a stair outdoors to gain access from the outside to the inside of the home. See our three-part educational series on “How to Select a Stair Lift (part 1, part 2, part 3)”. Straight and Curved Stair Lifts require the person with the disability to transfer from a wheelchair to the stair lift. If you or your disabled family member are in need of a lift, but cannot transfer to a stair lift, you will require a wheelchair platform lift or inclined platform lift.
Inclined and Vertical Platform Lifts
Inclined and vertical platform lifts are utilized to carry an individual in a wheelchair or scooter from one level of a building to another. If you or your disabled family member are in need of a lift, but cannot transfer to a stair lift, you will require a wheelchair platform lift or inclined platform lift. The inclined platform lift is a wheelchair platform installed on a stair. A platform lift can be installed anywhere inside or outside of a building to lift an individual in a wheelchair up to a higher balcony, platform, porch or deck

Atlanta Walk-In Tubs — Ella’s Deluxe and Ella’s Soaking Walk-In Hydrotherapy Tubs
New residential construction markets are competing for the savvy aging-in-place and universal design customer by building homes equipped standard with walk-in tubs.
Our favorite model at Atlanta Home Modifications, LLC is Ella’s Deluxe model
manufactured by Ella’s Walk-In Tubs and equipped with 22 air and hydrotherapy jets. Every Ella’s model includes the same excellent warranty, ozone sterilization and an in-line water heater.
The warranty for all models is lifetime limited warranty on stainless steel frame, door, door seal, and tub shell; and five year warranty on parts.
Ozone sterilization is an essential sterilizing feature and noted on the Ella’s website as follows: “A prominent feature on the Ella’s Deluxe is the Ozone Sterilization Generator. The Ozone Sterilization is a very effective sanitizer. It deodorizes and kills bacteria, viruses, microbes, and germs. Incredibly eco-friendly, ozone sterilization aids in keeping the tub clean. Ozone sterilization is controlled with push on/off button as needed during hydro massage.”
For more information regarding hydrotherapy, the following quote from the manufacturer’s website explains: “The Ella’s Deluxe strategically positioned 22 air and hydro therapy jets combined offers a more therapeutic bathing experience than traditional soaking baths. Combining the properties of air and hydro massage therapy, the Ella’s Deluxe tub features 12 hydro jets with an adjustable air flow control, an in-line water heater,10 air massage jets including 2 air jets built into the seat offering a unique and therapeutically beneficial bathing experience. The hydro massage is turned on and off with push button ease, and the hydro massage water flow intensity function is controlled by turning the rotary control handle. This feature allows you to adjust the water flow to either a mild, or more intense massage experience. This is accomplished by adding or reducing air into the water stream.”
The Deluxe model size is 29.5” x 55” (59” with extension) x40”. Ella’s Dual Drain Technology consists of:
- Dual 2” brass & copper drains (compare to one 1.5” standard drain)
- Two copper overflows for faster and reliable drainage
- Operated by two stainless steel mechanical cables for reliability
- Two separate extension drain handles for easier use operation
- Approximate 80 second draining time, at tub capacity”

New Course at CATEA — Home Modifications: Processes and Tools
Appropriate home modifications can help a person with a disability perform daily activities. They can also enable people who are aging into a disability to be able to stay in their homes longer. But what types of accommodations are possible? How can you determine what solutions will best fit a particular situation? What resources exist to help with the process?
The Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA) at Georgia Tech will be offering its course: Home Modifications: Processes and Tools starting September 7, 2011. It will run as a series of three webcasts on subsequent Wednesdays, from 12:00-2:00 PM (Eastern).
The course provides in-depth discussion about modifications that can be constructed, installed, or implemented to enhance an individual’s safety and function in the home environment. This course provides:
- Overview of functional barriers commonly experienced in homes;
- Legal and policy issues that affect provision of services, and accessibility technology;
- Universal design strategies to improve performance of daily activities;
- Resources for assessing, identifying and implementing modification needs.
This beginning-to-intermediate-level course is appropriate for people providing rehabilitation services as well as for people designing or building living spaces. Continuing education credits will be provided. Visit Home Modifications: Processes and Tools for further information about this course.
We will extend the early registration rate of $266 until the end of this week (August 26th). If you would like to take advantage of this offer, please contact Monique Waddell (Monique.waddell@dlpe.gatech.edu) for assistance with registration.
Visit http://www.catea.gatech.edu/courses.php for information about CATEA’s other courses or contact Susan E.
